What Dance Party reads from Slack

Dance Party reads Slack with a bot token limited to public channels. It reads the channel you pick and the names and avatars of the people who post there. It has no permission to post, react or read direct messages.

    Channel name, topic, purpose and member count, so DJ Agent can find the exact channel you mean. Archived and private channels are not listed.

    The 10 newest messages by default, up to 15, with mentions and channel links turned into readable names.
  • Images, GIFs and link previews
    Up to two per message, shown through Dance Party so files that need a Slack login still load on the display.
  • Thread reply counts
    How many replies a message has. Reply text is not read.
  • Custom emoji
    Your workspace's own emoji, so :shipit: looks the way it does in Slack.

How to connect Slack

Before you start

  • An owner or admin of your Dance Party workspace makes the Slack connection.
  • Permission to add apps to your Slack workspace. If your workspace requires app approval, a Slack admin approves the request first.
  • A public channel to show. Private channels and DMs are not supported.

    On the Dance Party Integrations page, click Connect Slack.
  2. 2
    Slack opens and shows what the app may do: view basic channel info, view messages in public channels it is added to, view people and view custom emoji. Check the workspace name at the top right, switch if needed, and click Allow.

    Slack returns you to Dance Party, where the card now says Connected.

    In Slack, add the app to the channel you want on screen: open the channel, type /invite, and pick Dance Party. Without that, Slack refuses to share the channel's messages.

    Ask DJ Agent for the channel by name, for example #wins, and assign the widget to a screen.

One Slack connection per workspace

One Slack workspace per Dance Party workspace. Every channel stream reads through that one connection, so one install covers #wins, #incidents and #announcements. A second Slack workspace, such as a sister company's, needs its own Dance Party workspace.

Read-only. The bot's four scopes can list public channels, read their history, look up names and read custom emoji. None of them can post, react, or open a DM. Remove it from one channel under the channel's Integrations tab, disconnect it on the Dance Party Integrations page, or have a Slack admin remove it under Manage apps.

Slack dashboard questions

Can I show a Slack channel on a TV in the office?

Yes. Connect Slack, invite the Dance Party app to a public channel, and ask DJ Agent for that channel. It runs as a Slack-style stream on any screen with the Dance Party Apple TV app.

How quickly does a new Slack message appear on the screen?

Within five minutes by default. A Slack stream refreshes every 5 minutes, the fastest refresh interval Dance Party offers.

Can it show a private Slack channel or DMs?

No. The Slack connection only lists and reads public channels, so private channels and direct messages never reach a screen.

Why does the widget say Dance Party is not in the channel?

Slack only shares a channel's messages with apps that are members. Open the channel, type /invite, pick Dance Party, and the next refresh fills in.

Do GIFs and images from Slack show on the display?

Yes. Up to two images or GIFs per message render in the stream, including files that normally need a Slack login to view.

Can Dance Party post to Slack or react to messages?

No. It has no write scopes in Slack, so it cannot post, reply, react or run slash commands.

Can a Slack channel share a widget with numbers from another tool?

Yes. A widget can combine a Slack channel with another connected source, such as the newest #sales-wins post above a HubSpot revenue total.
