How to connect Semrush

Before you start

  • An owner or admin of your Dance Party workspace makes the Semrush connection.
  • A Semrush Business plan. Semrush only issues API keys to Business subscriptions.
  • Semrush API units on the account. A new Business plan starts with none, and they are bought separately.

    In Semrush, open your profile menu, then Subscription info, then the API Units tab. Check you have units, then copy your API key.Open the Semrush API page ↗

    In Dance Party, open Integrations and click Connect Semrush.
  3. 3
    Paste it into the API key field, then Save. It is the API key from Semrush, not your Semrush password.

    The card shows Connected. Semrush has no free test call, so the key is first used when DJ Agent previews your domain, and any plan or unit problem is named there.

One Semrush connection per workspace

A workspace holds one Semrush API key. Because Semrush reports on any domain, that one key covers your own sites, your clients' sites and your competitors, limited only by your API unit balance.

The Semrush Analytics API only returns reports, so the key cannot change your Semrush projects. Every read does spend API units, which is the reason to keep SEO widgets on a daily refresh. Regenerate the key in Semrush to cut Dance Party off.

Yes. Connect Semrush with its API key, describe the SEO dashboard, and assign it to an Apple TV running Dance Party.

Which Semrush plan do I need?

Business. Semrush only offers API access on the Business plan, and you also need API units, which are bought separately.

Does a Semrush dashboard use API units?

Yes. Every refresh spends units from your Semrush balance. Semrush data changes daily at most, so a daily refresh is the sensible setting.

Can I compare my site with competitors?

Yes. Semrush reports on any domain, so a widget can rank your site against several competitors by organic traffic or keywords.

Can it chart our Semrush traffic over the past year?

No. Dance Party reads the current Semrush overview for a domain, not its history, so boards show where you stand today.

Does it read my Semrush Position Tracking projects?

No. Dance Party reads Semrush's domain-level databases, not your Projects. Keyword positions come from Semrush's organic research data.

Why did my Semrush widget say API units are exhausted?

Your Semrush unit balance hit zero. Buy more units or wait for the balance to renew, and the widget picks up again on its next refresh.
