Office TV Dashboard Design Rules for a 20-Foot Room

Measure from the screen to the farthest chair, divide by 150, and that’s how tall your biggest number has to be. Twenty feet gives you 1.6 inches on the glass, about 6 percent of the picture height on a 55 inch TV, or a 90 px font on a 1920 by 1080 canvas. Six numbers per screen. One of them twice the size of the others. Everything inside a 60 point margin. The rest of this is where those numbers come from and how to get a dashboard built to them.

The size table

Find your farthest seat, read across, build to that number. This assumes a 55 inch 16:9 screen, whose picture is about 27 inches tall. Cap height is the height of a capital letter on the actual glass.

Every row is the same arithmetic: cap height divided by picture height, times 1080, times 1.4. Nothing in the table is a taste call, so you can rerun it for a 65 inch panel or a 12 foot room and get an answer I’d agree with.

The 10 foot row is a floor, not a target. 45 px is legible from ten feet, but it doesn’t read as the hero number from the doorway. In a small room I set the hero at 60 to 70 px and let the supporting numbers sit at 45. Legibility is the minimum. Hierarchy is what makes someone look up.

Labels and axis text run at half the hero size and never below it. At 20 feet that’s a 45 px font for the words under the number. Bigger than anything on your laptop dashboard, which is the whole point.

Font size is not letter height

A 90 px font doesn’t draw a 90 px letter. In most sans-serif faces the cap height is roughly 70 percent of the font size, so you multiply your target letter height by about 1.4 to get the CSS value. That’s why the table has two different columns, and why a dashboard that looks correctly sized in a spec doc still reads small on the wall.

Check the real number, not the CSS number. Stand at the back of the room. If you have to lean, it’s too small.

Where the 150 comes from

Two numbers bracket the answer: a floor at distance divided by 200, and a build target at distance divided by 150. I am building to 150.

  • The 150:1 rule. The farthest viewer should sit no more than 150 times the height of the on-screen text. AV integrators adopted it once 1080p and 4K made the older 4/6/8 rule useless, because higher resolution shrank the pixel and nobody noticed.
  • AVIXA DISCAS. The display sizing standard (ANSI/INFOCOMM V202.01:2016) uses an acuity factor of 200 for basic decision making, which puts the farthest viewer at no more than 200 times the height of the smallest element that matters. At 20 feet that’s a 1.2 inch letter. That’s the floor.
  • The digital signage tables land on the floor, not the target. MediaSignage’s typography and viewing distance guide puts headline text at 120 pt for a 20 foot viewer. Run that through the 70 percent cap-height ratio and you get a 1.17 inch letter, which is the DISCAS floor almost exactly, and a third smaller than the 1.6 inches I build to. Signage headlines get read one at a time. A dashboard gets scanned, so I take the bigger number.

Milan Balac put the practical version of this in Smashing Magazine on September 4, 2025, writing about 10-foot interfaces: “Typography can become especially tricky in 10-ft experiences. When in doubt, go larger.” Yes. Go larger.

Six numbers, one hero

Put six numbers on a wall screen and make one of them twice the size of the other five. That’s the layout that survives a three-second glance from the back of the room.

The arithmetic forces it. At 20 feet your hero number eats 6 percent of the picture height, its label eats another 3, and the tile needs white space around it or the whole thing reads as noise. Do that honestly and you get one hero plus four or five supporting numbers. Not twelve.

If you have twelve metrics, you have two dashboards and a rotation. Fifteen seconds each is plenty. Cramming them onto one screen is how a display turns into wallpaper, which is the same reason a static KPI grid stops getting looked at by week two.

Contrast, weight, and the 60 point margin

Design for a lit room and a TV panel that’s doing its own thing to your picture.

  • Go past WCAG AA. The 4.5:1 minimum for normal text and 3:1 for large text is a floor for a screen two feet from your face. On a wall at 20 feet with the blinds open, aim for 7:1 and stop using mid-gray for anything that carries a number.
  • Bold weights only. Hairline and light weights get eaten by TV sharpening and motion processing. A 300-weight number at 90 px looks thinner on the wall than it does in your browser.
  • Off-white on near-black.It holds up under overhead lighting and it doesn’t bloom the way pure white on pure black does on an OLED panel.
  • Respect the safe area. Apple’s tvOS layout guidance insets content 60 points from the top and bottom and 80 points from the sides on a 1920 by 1080 layout. Plenty of TVs still overscan and crop the outer edge, so anything closer than that’s a coin flip.

Measure your room in four minutes

  • Tape measure from the screen to the farthest chair anyone actually sits in. Not the far wall. The chair.
  • Divide by 150. That’s your minimum cap height in inches.
  • Measure the picture height of the TV. A 55 inch 16:9 screen is about 27 inches tall, a 65 inch is about 32. Divide your cap height by picture height to get the percentage that matters.
  • Multiply that percentage by 1080, then by 1.4. That’s your CSS font size on a 1080p canvas.

Write those two numbers down. The percentage and the font size. They’re the spec for every dashboard that goes on that wall.

Building to the spec with a sentence

Type the room into the prompt. Dance Party’s DJ Agent builds the dashboard from what you describe, so the spec you just measured goes in as part of the description:

“Full-screen dashboard for a 55 inch TV with the back row 20 feet out. One hero number: HubSpot closed-won revenue this month against the $1.2M goal, cap height at least 6 percent of screen height. Under it, four supporting numbers at half that size: deals created this week, deals in commit, Stripe MRR, and days left in the month. Off-white text on near-black, bold weights only, 5 percent margin on all sides.”

Then you walk to the back of the room, look at it, and say make the hero 40 percent bigger. It rebuilds. That loop takes about a minute, and it’s the only way I know to actually hit a legibility spec instead of approximating it.

A template gallery can’t take that sentence. The widget set ships with a type scale tuned for a laptop, so you get a 42 px number, an 11 px axis label, and no setting that changes either. That gap is the practical case for AI-built dashboards over pre-built ones.

The data behind it comes from the connectors you already run. HubSpot, Salesforce, Stripe, Slack, GitHub, the Google suite, and more than 70 sources in the catalogue, all read-only. The hardware note for 2026

Buy now only if a screen is dark today. Otherwise wait for September.

The box to buy is the 128GB Apple TV 4K at $249, because it’s the one with the Ethernet port and a dashboard that runs all day shouldn’t depend on office Wi-Fi. The 64GB model is $199 after Apple’s June 25, 2026 price increase, up from $129. Check what’s already taped behind your screens, because that changes the answer. Apple announced tvOS 27 at WWDC on June 8, 2026, and it drops the Apple TV HD from 2015 and the first-generation Apple TV 4K from 2017. It ships this fall. The current release is tvOS 26.6, out on July 27, 2026. If an office box is on the drop list but still running, September is your replacement window and the new hardware is your replacement. The bottom line

Distance to the farthest chair, divided by 150, is the height of your biggest number. Multiply by 1.4 to get the font size, because caps run about 70 percent of it. Six numbers per screen with one hero, bold weights, off-white on near-black, everything 60 points in from the edge.

Every one of those is a sentence you can hand to an AI that builds the dashboard, which is a lot faster than fighting a widget editor’s type scale. Measure the room once. Reuse the spec on every screen you hang after that.
